Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
The Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base is situated at 1375 Panda Avenue in the Chenghua District of Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, China. It lies approximately 10 kilometres from the city centre and over 30 kilometres from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport.
This globally recognised centre serves as a giant panda conservation and relocation facility, a scientific research and breeding station, a hub for public education, and a destination for educational tourism. Spanning 1000 acres, the base is a leading ecological project dedicated to the protection and breeding of endangered species native to China, including giant pandas and red pandas.
Originating from the breeding and treatment programmes at Chengdu Zoo, the base expanded to include an open laboratory in 1997. In 2019, it attracted more than 9 million visitors, both domestic and international.

One Day Trip to Chengdu Panda Base and Leshan Buddha Tour
The Panda experience is the highlight of the Chengdu tour. The Chengdu Panda Base is located about a 30-minute drive from downtown Chengdu. This giant panda breeding and research centre draws nearly 100,000 international visitors each year. Spanning several hectares filled with bamboo groves and a habitat designed to mimic the pandas' natural environment, the centre is home to over 50 pandas. Notably, summer is the best season to see adorable baby pandas here.
The renowned Leshan Giant Buddha, standing 71 metres tall, is carved directly into a cliff face. The statue depicts a seated Buddha with his hands resting on his knees. It is the tallest Buddha statue in the world, with shoulders measuring 28 metres across. The smallest toenail is large enough to seat a person, while the Buddha’s ear, spanning 7 metres, can comfortably accommodate two people. The statue’s head is 14.7 metres tall and 10 metres wide, adorned with 1,021 clusters of curly hair. Locals often say, “The mountain is a Buddha, and the Buddha is the mountain,” reflecting the harmonious blend of nature and sculpture.
