Geisha Girls in Tokyo

Geisha are skilled female entertainers from Japan, steeped in the rich tradition of performing arts like dance, music, and singing. They're not just artists, but also charming conversationalists and gracious hosts, bringing a unique flair to every event. Dressed in elegant, flowing kimonos, adorned with intricate hairstyles and signature oshiroi makeup, their distinctive look is unforgettable.

They shine brightest at ozashiki parties, delighting affluent guests with their artistry and poise, while also showcasing their talents on stage and at cultural festivals. The first female geisha graced the scene in 1751, emerging from a time when male performers dominated the craft. As time progressed, the profession transformed into a vibrant world largely defined by these remarkable women.

The arts performed by geisha are renowned for their sophistication and, in certain instances, are distinctively unique to the geisha world within Japan. Take, for instance, the Gion district in Kyoto, the exclusive home where kyo-mai, a traditional Japanese dance style, is imparted. This dance form is taught only to the geisha of this district by the esteemed Inoue school. Notably, the school's previous head, Inoue Yachiyo, earned the prestigious title of "Living National Treasure" from the Government of Japan in 1955, which is the pinnacle of artistic recognition in the nation.
